All right, now that I’ve told you what gratitude can do for you and why gratitude is so powerful, let me explain to you what it actually is. Gratitude means counting your blessings. It is an expression of thanks and appreciation for what you have right now, but also an appreciation for the road you’ve taken to get to where you are today.
But to me, it’s also more than that. It’s a way to take you to a place where you can feel joy and happiness.
The mindful practice of gratitude is closely related to meditation. You heard about meditation, right? Most people think meditation is just sitting in a corner in a Buddha pose, making your mind blank, listening to relaxing music, and hoping that the universe will give you all the right answers. But in reality, meditation is just a way to concentrate your thinking on something relaxing, on something that makes you feel positive emotions.
Well, what can be more powerful than feeling thankful for your own existence, for your blessings, for everything you have in life?
Taking a few minutes out of each day to think about all the good things that happened in your life, and feeling truly thankful for them, is the beginning of the road to feeling happy about yourself and your life.

You see, your mental and emotional state has a huge role to play in the way you perceive your surroundings, your situation in life, and the people close to you. A mindful focus on practicing gratitude will allow you to be more positive and see opportunities you would never otherwise be able to see. After all, it’s hard to be angry, resentful, or sad when you’re feeling grateful. Not only that, but gratitude allows you to keep stock of the resources you already have and provides you with inspiration and the drive necessary to use these resources and achieve your goals.
And the best part is it only takes five or 10 minutes a day. Just take a few minutes each day — maybe in the morning or right before you go to bed — and focus on being thankful for what you have, and you will feel less stressed out and more productive.

Oprah Winfrey does it, too. In 2017, when addressing the graduating class of Skidmore College, she said “I practice being grateful. And a lot of people say, ‘Oh Oprah, that’s easy for you ‘cause you got everything!’” Winfrey continued, “I got everything because I practiced being grateful.”
